About Champney's West Newfoundland

Situated in a sheltered harbor along the north shore of Trinity Bay Newfoundland and Labrador, Champney's West (known locally as " the island") is a fishing village steeped in history and tradition. Champney's clings to the rocks of the Trinity Bight area, a popular stop along the discovery trail.

This fishing outport, like many others in the province, was effected by declining fish stocks and closure of the cod fishery. Today there still are commercial fishermen plying the waters around Champney's but the numbers of fisher persons has dwindled compared to days of old. Although things have changed, the way of life continues on, hardy souls bring home their catch and still find time for a friendly chat with visitors. Champney's West is a place where you can make friends with ease and feel at home no matter how long you visit or if you choose to stay.

If you are looking for breathtaking natural scenery, the rocky shores, fishing structures, boats, coves or clear open waters. The scenery of Champney's will provide you with endless hours of viewing pleasure. If it's a great picture that you wish to snap or if you desire to pick a scene for creating a painting, finding a place that's right for you, will not take long.

The Island is a place where perceptions meet reality. The Community lives long on tradition and friendship. It's a place to lose perceptions and find new ones, a place where spirited and honest interaction can come to life. A place to call home.

Steeped In Heritage

Champney's West was not always the name of this great little place. In the early years it was known as Salmon Cove West. Salmon Cove was the name of the whole area that today takes in the communities of Champney's West, Champney's East and Champney's Arm. Read more about our history.

The picture to the left was taken along the Fox Island Hiking trail. The location is known as Quart Cove. This is a great place to see uplifted and altered sedimentary rock beds that create points of land jutting out into the sea. These coves and inlets were formed by millions of years of erosion actions.
